Unit purpose
The purpose of this unit is to give drivers, vehicle owners and related staff the essential knowledge and skills in mobility and wheelchair assistance thereby enabling passengers with a disability and passengers who may need assistance access to taxi and private hire transport services.
This unit is suitable for candidates who currently work or are considering working in the taxi and private hire industry.
This unit is designed to give taxi and private hire drivers the skills and knowledge to safely transfer passengers with a disability and passengers who may need assistance to an accessible vehicle. The unit will also cover the carriage of assistance dogs, the use of disability aids such as a wheelchair and ramps and the practical safety checks of equipment prior to loading and unloading wheelchairs.
Some customers have limited choice in their selection of transport. This includes those who may face discriminatory problems in accessing and using conventional modes of transport. This unit emphasises the legal duties and safe practice required of drivers to ensure customers with a disability, including their assistance dogs are safely and comfortably transported to their destination at no extra charge.
